Mates riding for the kids

Story

I'm riding in Pedal 4 Kids this year to raise important funds for Sydney Children's Hospital Foundation. I am dad to Conor, who is 8 years old. When he was born he couldnt eat - his throat hadn't formed properly and it wasnt connected to his stomach. He was rushed to Sydney Childrens Hospital for life saving surgery. Since that initial surgey at just 1 day old he has undergone more than 10 further procedures. His diagnosis at birth was Oesophageal Atresia and Tracheo Oesophageal Fistula. What a mouthful!
Oesophageal Atresia (OA) is the most frequent digestive malformation occurring worldwide. OA patients have respiratory, nutritional and gastroenterological issues not only in the first years of life but also in adolescence and adulthood. Sydney Children’s Hospital has the only dedicated multidisciplinary clinic dedicated to the care of children with OA. The clinic is a family-centred, multidisciplinary specialist clinic which offers comprehensive medical, surgical, nursing and allied health care throughout childhood and during their transition to adult medical services. However as OA is a rare disease, it requires large cohorts from different centres/countries to make progress in understanding the disease, defining standard of care, developing innovative approach and obtaining information on outcome and prognosis. In September 2016 Sydney will for the first time host the  4th International Conference on Oesophageal Atresia.
The conference aims to bring together international experts from all over the world dedicated to the care of OA patients to help establish a systematic multidisciplinary approach to the care of these complex patients in Australia, as well as increase awareness and support for those suffering from the condition within our local community. During the conference there will be dedicated sessions aimed at parents of children with this condition to help improve their understanding of this condition. Any money that you donate to our Pedal 4 Kids Team will go towards helping make this conference dedicated to the care of children with OA an success and also towards improving the services (OA Clinic at Sydney Children’s Hospital) that are currently available for these children.

Please take time to visit the conference website www.oa2016.com.au to view an exciting scientific program

We thank you for your support
